Spring Programs

Spring Programs

Spring is the main season for lacrosse.  MYL participates in competitive league play for boys (grades 3-8) in associate with the Town Pride League and for girls (grades 3-8) in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League.   For grades 1-2, MYL conducts a spring clinic that is a fun way to introduce the youngest payers to the game of lacrosse.

When does the season begin?
The season starts in early March with indoor practices for boys/girls 3rd - 8th grade programs and we finish the season in mid-June. Please keep in mind field availability is weather dependent. At times are schedule is impacted if the grass fields are not opened. The fields must be dry enough by the first practices so we do not destroy the grass before it has a chance to get strong enough to last the whole season.

How can I volunteer as a coach or assistant coach?
For the boys program, contact Adam Graber.

For the girls program, contact  Tommy Blake.

What lacrosse leagues is Medfield Youth Lacrosse (MYL) involved with?
The Boys program plays in the Town Pride League (TPL). The Girls program plays in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL).

What is TPL?

The Boys program (Grade 3 through 8) plays in the Town Pride League (TPL) exclusively.  MYL is a charter founding member of TPL.  The Town Pride League is made of a group pf like-minded town lacrosse programs dedicated to providing the best lacrosse experience possible for its players.  It is a league that is configured to grade level play with the goal of developing as many players in each grade as possible.  More information is available at the TPL Website.

How are teams created in the Boy’s TPL program?
All teams are based on grade levels (e.g. 7th graders play 7th graders only). For 5th-8th graders, there will be A and B level teams, while the 3rd-4th grade teams are balanced. Tryouts are held typically in November for placement on the 5th thru 8th grade A and B teams, but there is room and a spot for everyone. No one will be turned away.  For the Boys 5th-8th grades, the try-outs are organized and managed by the grade coordinator. In an effort to obtain objective feedback, MYL uses independent evaluators.

What is FGLL?
The Girls program plays in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL). FGLL’s mission is to promote girls’ youth lacrosse in an environment that emphasizes fun while developing skills, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and integrity. For further information on FGLL, see its website at http://www.fgll.org.  Participating girls will be insured under the FGLL's progam.  USA Lacrosse membership is not required.

How are teams created in the Girl’s FGLL program?
For the girls, all the teams are balanced so there are strong players as well as newer players on each team.

Do I have to buy equipment?
Yes. The following equipment is required at all levels. For insurance and safety reasons, actual lacrosse equipment is required – for example: no hockey helmets.

  • Boy’s and Girl’s lacrosse sticks are very different – please verify the type of stick prior to purchasing one.
  • MYL provides goalie protective gear and a goalie stick for all levels.
  • Boys (1 – 8 grades): Lacrosse stick, arm and shoulder pads, helmet, gloves, protective cup and mouth guard.  For additional information please click on this link: Boys equipment info.   How to properly fit a lacrosse helmet: https://youtu.be/4HQdzp691bU.  Additional information about equipment can be found here https://www.usalacrosse.com/equipment
  • Spring Clinic - Girls (1-2 grades):  Lacrosse stick and mouth guard.  MYL will supply goggles.
  • Girls (3-8 grades):  Lacrosse stick, goggles and mouth guard.   The mouth guard is not allowed to have any protrusions (i.e.: no tabs)

Can I request that my son/daughter play on a team with his/her friend so that we can car pool?

As described above, our main goal is to create teams that will be successful.  Requests to switch teams will not be considered.

My child is repeating a school grade - what are our options?
Our program and our league are organized with the philosophy of having grade-level teams competing against one another.

Boy's TPL Age Rule for 5th through 8th Grade:

1.  The TPL grade division a player participates in must coincide with the grade they are enrolled in school during the spring youth season. If an exception is needed, it can be petitioned to the appropriate grade level director.

2.  However, there is an age limit in place to provide a safe playing environment:

5th Grade Division – born on or after 05/01/2009.  Born before, play in 6th Grade Division

6th Grade Division – born on or after 05/01/2008.  Born before, play in 7th Grade Division

7th Grade Division – born on or after 05/01/2007.  Born before, play in 8th Grade Division

8th Grade Division – born on or after 05/01/2006.  Born before, not eligible to play in TPL
